Advanced Tools: Projector

Did you ever think a product marketed to kids (ages 5+) would be considered an advanced tool in the cookie decorating world? Well, here we are.

Does portrait mode make it feel like more of an adult appliance? I think so. I love my SmART Sketcher Projector (Linked here: https://amzn.to/4kqvY5b) for so many reasons! The very first being that I have terrible handwriting. The second being that I am terrible at spacing out words. If I was left to my own devices, every word would likely have two very large letters and the rest would be squished in, making it obvious to others exactly where my panic set in. I digress, here is a list of things a projector can help you with.

  • Handwriting and unique fonts
  • Spacing
  • line art (with icing or with edible ink)
  • Image visualization

The list seems small but each one comes with a crazy amount of things that you are able to do. Take handwriting for example, having a projector give you the ability to write in a pretty way but there are thousands of font options to choose from. Not all fonts are great for cookie decorating but there are still so many options! I love using my projector for numbers, so far 60 has been a hit. (Thanks mom, dad, and all their friends).

Line art also comes with about a million different possibilities. The projector helps you execute your design but the design options are endless. You can utilize the projector for a simple design that you are just not confident in free-handing, or go crazy with a complex design. The Bluey cookie above was a practice round for me. It is more complex than I would want to free-hand so I used my projector and an edible ink marker and I thought the outcome was fun! To the right is a design that I actually did free-hand but if I was not confident in my ability to make that pattern actually look like a flower instead of a mess of lines, I could have used the projector for a bit of assistance.

Lastly is image visualization. If you have a design that is in your head but you can’t quite translate it to a cookie. Sketch something out and project it onto your cookie to see if you like the placement or want to make any changes. Sometimes that is all it takes for the more visual people out there.

If you plan to decorate more than a few times a year, a projector is a great item to look into. Not too serious but can get you some pretty neat results. Good luck decorating!
